Water And Sanitation Projects
“We provide clean water and sustainable sanitation solutions to improve health, dignity, and resilience in Indigenous communities.”

Maji Safi na Salama
The Maji Safi na Salama Project is an IWDA initiative dedicated to improving access to clean and safe water for Indigenous and pastoralist communities in Tanzania. Recognizing that women and girls bear the greatest burden of water collection, this project focuses on reducing inequalities in water access, improving sanitation, and strengthening community health.
Through community-driven solutions such as rainwater harvesting, construction of safe water points, hygiene education, and advocacy for inclusive water governance, IWDA ensures that Indigenous voices—especially women and youth—are at the center of decision-making.
This project not only addresses urgent health and sanitation needs but also promotes gender equity, reduces school dropouts linked to water scarcity, and empowers communities to build resilience against climate change.
🌍 Goal: To secure safe, reliable, and sustainable water systems that improve the quality of life and uphold the rights of Indigenous peoples.

Sustainable Toilets
The Sustainable Toilets Project is an IWDA initiative aimed at improving sanitation and hygiene for Indigenous and pastoralist communities in Tanzania. Many rural communities face challenges of poor sanitation facilities, which directly impact health, safety, and dignity—especially for women, girls, and people with disabilities.
This project introduces eco-friendly, community-managed toilets that are safe, affordable, and sustainable. By combining traditional knowledge with modern design, the initiative reduces open defecation, protects water sources, and promotes healthier living environments.
Women and youth are actively involved in planning, building, and managing these facilities, ensuring that solutions reflect cultural practices while meeting health standards. Hygiene education campaigns accompany the project to foster behavioral change and long-term adoption.
🌍 Goal: To provide Indigenous communities with clean, safe, and sustainable sanitation facilities, improving health outcomes and advancing dignity, equality, and climate resilience.
